The gates to the third chapter of Runes of Magic have been opened. With the successful launch of update 3.0.0, ‘The King’s Call’, Frogster has just launched the first phase of the extensive expansion ‘The Elder Kingdoms’. Players can now set foot in the first region of the new continent of Zandorya with its imposing cities and vast estates to discover a large array of new game content. The hotly contested Kingdom of Dalanis can be reached by high-level online adventurers after completing a series of quests in the Aotulia Volcano region.

As Chapter III opens, players can expect new rewards including precious armor that can now be endowed with individual attributes by swapping gold and ‘Ancient Mementos’ for special items. In response to community feedback, less-experienced players can now select a difficulty level when entering the dungeons ‘Hall of Survivors’ and ‘Heart of the Ocean’. Cautious players can now also save their game progress in specific instances which means that when loading a saved game status, they no longer need to tackle bosses that they have already defeated.

This first phase of Chapter III also introduces an expanded in-game Monster Card System allowing players to gain valuable cards that are dropped by NPC opponents once they are defeated. The monster cards now have additional attribute points to improve their character’s stats. Update 3.0.0 also contains the announced three new guild drill grounds, six new guild quests and stone fortifications to expand the guild castles. Furthermore, elite skills have been adjusted in order to optimize the game balance.

As with all Runes of Magic expansions, the update is free and will install automatically when the game is started. Together with the new raid instance, the online role-playing game is also being expanded with an additional Public Encounter: ‘Bloodbath Valley’. This combat area for large groups, located in the Aotulia Volcano, is divided into four stages – the challenge for adventurers in this high-level area is to master them all. The goal in ‘Bloodbath Valley’ is to stem the threat of the Naga who are receiving support from a powerful guardian. But players aren’t going to be facing the waves of Naga warriors on their own: Flaming demons and special Elven Commandos will battle side by side with the allied adventurers.

On a more peaceful note, the ‘Flower Festival’, the Taborean version of Valentine’s Day, is also beginning. Within this in-game event, amorous adventurers can plant roses or get themselves titles or costumes – including a birthday suit. There’s also a new mini-game to bring a little variety to heroes’ everyday routines: There’s a packed treasure chamber waiting for players who enter a dungeon labyrinth and single-handedly can use their skills to tackle opponents and solve some tricky tasks.

Patch ‘2.1.6 – Fall of the Demon Lord’ also implements another epic quest series in Runes of Magic. This leads players, among other places, to the ‘Great Barrier’ which once kept the sinister Naga in exile. Chapter III – The Elder Kingdoms will take players to the newly rediscovered continent. Here, the old kingdom of Dalanis lies in chaos and turmoil with plotters scheming behind the throne of the child-king Callaway. Little remains of the old glory of the ruling dynasty from the time of the legendary King Kalume. In total desperation, the people long for the return of their ancient heroes. So now it is up to all brave adventurers to support the young regent and bring order to the chaos.

Adventurers will be able to take their first steps into a kingdom full of intrigue and uprisings when they enter the Thunderhoof Hills, the first territory in the The Elder Kingdoms. A new zone concept has also been created for the new chapter of Runes of Magic. The new continent has moved away from closed territories and has evolved into versatile and varied landscapes. When gamers journey to the Thunderhoof Hills they will first enter the forest, pass by waterfalls and then enter one of the three new cities to trade and meet other players, or explore a mystery shrouded graveyard of long dead kings while staying within the same zone. One of the new instances, the Dungeon of Dalanis, leads adventurers into the world of shadows beneath the Thunderhoof Hills. Here dreadful terrors lurk that can only be overcome by mobilizing everyone in your group..

The history of the old kingdoms of Runes of Magic will be told in Chapter III through many new quests. Level 55 and above adventurers will become familiar with a new skill system where they can select from a pool of special abilities which will be available to them in combat. There will also be plenty of opportunities to try out these new abilities in the new chapter, including in conflicts with other guilds. The Elder Kingdoms also expands on the existing opportunities which guilds have to equip their castles with new buildings. Rival guilds will also be able to lay their hands on siege weapons. Quests for whole player communities, Player vs. Player rankings and reward systems, as well as a new battlefield – the Tyrefen Mountains – bring additional depth to the PvP game. Three additional mini-games have also been built into the game.

Groups of adventurers will find access to the ‘Cave of the Water Dragon’ across the ‘Throne of the Water’ in the ‘Weeping Coast’ region. During their quest, the elemental being Polython will transport them into the throne room of Zanordoth, the old king of the Water Dragons. His demented son Lytfir has awoken from a lengthy slumber. With heavy heart, King Zanordoth banished the water dragon to the darkest corner of the cave after he turned against his alliance with the humans, forged long ago.

Now, player groups have the task of sending the quick-tempered dragon back to rest. To achieve this goal, they need to collect several soul essences from around the instance. But there are some powerful elemental beings that make life difficult. The essences will let players receive a crystal ball from Zanordoth, which they can use to recapture Lytfir, sending him back to sleep. The dungeon consists of a chamber containing 45 fields, each with a seal that hides a range of different obstacles to challenge the adventurer. Each of these demands a special tactic: For example, ice barricades can only be overcome by using a heavy artillery piece. Players have to use the right tools for the job during the game‘s ten minutes. Clown ghosts constantly appear, making matters even worse for our heroes. Once adventurers discover the field containing the key, they’ll receive rewards as well as an entry into the next round. Special titles can also be unlocked using ‘ghost cards’, to reward players for completing the challenge.

There is also additional work in progress on other solo challenges which will be added to Runes of Magic. “We like to always look for ways to keep our players entertained and offer them plenty of variety,” commented PR Manager Philipp Senkbeil. “MMO players don’t always want to be in groups and mini-games are a perfect change from the routine of raids.”
