So recently I have had some people in-game asking me how to socket gems. And, if you haven’t ever done it – or if you haven’t done it in a while – it’s easy to forget. So, here is all you need to know about how to socket gems in WoW for your new gear:
To socket a gem into a piece of gear: Simply shift + right click on the item (no matter where it is on your toon) and you’ll pull up the socketing window in game. Then, you can click and drag the gem you want to socket there over to that window and drop it. When you’re ready to make those gems permanently a part of that item, click on the “Socket Gems” button in the bottom of that window and you’re done.
To find the right gems to socket: You want to look at the item and see what colors of gems it will hold. Then, head to the AH or your friendly JC in game and find the different gems that match that color. Now, here’s the trick – you want to make sure that you are getting gems that will actually help you in the game. You don’t want to socket things that won’t help the stats you really need. And, although there are only red, yellow, and blue sockets, there are tons of colored gems out there. How do you know which gems fit into which sockets? Well, they will normally tell you at the bottom of the gem window when you mouse over it. But, here are the different colors of gems and what they match:
1. Orange: red and yellow
2. Purple: red and blue
3. Green: yellow and blue
There are also special meta gems that only fit into meta gem sockets.
To switch out a gem: Simply open the socketing window, click and drag the new gem over to that socket and drop it. It will destroy the other gem that was already socketed – so make sure that is what you want to do.
You don’t have to fill all of the sockets right away if you don’t want to, but it is usually a good idea to do so because you will find that there are normally socket bonuses for socketing all slots.
