WoW Super Secret: Farming Gold in Icecrown

Curious how all those gamers in WoW brag about making 200+ gold an hour? Want to know how you can do it too? Well, I’m about to share my super secret sweet spot with you – that you can use no matter if you’re Alliance or Horde… So, keep this under wraps…

There is a place in Icecrown that is a gold farmer’s dream. It’s in the Valley of the Fallen Hero, and you can basically just sit here for hours and make tons of gold. In this article, I’ll show you exactly how I did it, give you screenshots of what I did, and show you how you can do it too. And, the beauty of this spot is that there are very rarely other players farming it! It can easily become your own personal gold maker.

When you get to Icecrown, you want to head to the northwest of the area. You will be northwest of Ymirheim, but southwest of Aldur’thar. It is the area on your map where there is a small road that juts out into the middle, toward Ymirheim. In the screenshot, you will see a red dot right where I’ve described. This is where you want to go and park your toon for a while. Here is the trick though, you want to make sure you are between both of the Scourge areas so that you don’t aggro any of them when you aren’t looking or when you don’t mean to. There is a large area here where you can farm, where the yellow mobs run past you and you can pick them off as you want.

The mobs that are here are the Spirits of the Fallen Heroes. They are all between level 78 and 80, and are all yellow as they run by. They hit for around 400-700 a swing, but are pretty squishy overall to farm. Each one will drop money, between 9-55 silver each, and most drop other items as well. The Frostweave drop rate is awesome here, I would say over 75% at times. And, even the vendor scrap drops will net you between 10-20 gold an hour – which is decent. There are also some good green drops here, and some blues. While I was doing the farming for this article, I did not get a blue drop -
but I did get plenty of greens, which I’ve taken screenshots of to show you. Each of the greens that I got sold for over 10 gold each, which is another decent area where you can make more gold from here.

Now, let’s go through the area for the first hour that I was there so you can see what I do and how much money I normally make per hour. I started off with 282g, 51s, no frostweave and no greens in my bags when I hit Icecrown, that way you will know where I stand when it comes to how I’m calculating how much gold I have made.

I plant myself right below where the shadowed area is (you will see it when you get there). You’ll have mobs running past you in either singles or groups of 2-4 at a time. There are also some other yellow mobs, Spirits of the Fallen Heroes, that are walking around below where you are. (You can easily pick these off as well, but be careful not to aggro the Scourge below them.)

I started this round of farming off with only 282 gold, and my bags are cleared of green items and Frostweave. I start by buffing myself with everything I’ve got (I’m doing this run on a level 80 Fire Mage), such as armor, intelligence, and so forth. Then, I start picking off the runners as they come by. I try to only aggro one at a time, as they can easily overwhelm you if you get four or five. Depending on your class and skill, you can aggro as many as you’d like here.

After only 20 minutes of farming here, I’m already up 10 gold, 20 Frostweave Cloth, and I have 3 good green drops. Now, these 3 greens surprised me. Normally, the green drops are about 30% here, so this was a great first 20 minutes for me. After only 35 minutes of farming, I’m up 20 gold, 35 Frostweave Cloth, and I now have 5 greens. So, this was an awesome first 30 minutes.

After my first hour here in this one spot, I am up to 340 gold already. But, I have to repair a bit, so I hop on my mount and fly to the nearest area, which is the Argent Vanguard. I repair here (which costs me 10 gold) and sell my vendor scrap, which makes me back over 20 gold. So, I am not up to 350 gold after one hour of farming one specific area. I do still have the cloth and the greens that I need to list on the auction house. So, I port to Dalaran (the beauty of a Mage toon!) and hit the AH. Of course, it costs me around 15 gold to list my items all on the auction house, but that’s ok. But, it looks like for my first hour in this area, I banked around 100 gold, which is pretty decent!

Now, my bags are cleared out and I’m all repaired and ready to go. So, I head back to Argent Vanguard and then fly over to my area in Icecrown. I stay here in this same spot for this four hour time frame to prove that you can make some really good gold in certain areas of the game. Every hour, I do head back to Dalaran and hit the auction house, sell vendor scrap, and repair. My repair bills for this area run around 10-14 gold each time, which does take away from my overall total – but I’m a cloth wearer (on this toon), so my stuff damages faster than I would like.

During this time, I ended up with 12 full stacks of Frostweave (20 cloths each) plus a few extras, 17 green drops, and tons of vendor scrap. The Frostweave sold for 22 gold each for each stack and around 20 for the extras, which totals an extra 284 gold – already double the amount of gold I started with! I also have 17 greens on the auction house that netted over 300 gold altogether as well. The vendor scrap totaled around 85 gold as well, which gives me a grand total of 669 gold on drops. Top this with the money dropped by the mobs, which totaled right at 235 for four hours of farming, and I have made a grand total of 901 gold in four hours of farming one easy area.

*NOTE: If you are farming this area during the week, it’s best to save up the cloth and the drops that you want to place on the auction house for the weekends when there are more players on. This will help to maximize your money made on these drops and help to maximize your profits as well.

You can easily head to Icecrown with your level 80 toon and do this same thing I did. You can actually make more money here than doing dailies, but I would always recommend that you do dailies as well – just for the gold. For those that are really gold hungry, you might want to take a toon here that can take on a lot of damage, such as a mail or plate wearer. This way, you can aggro more mobs as they run by you and you can easily take down more. The faster you can take them down, the more money you will make.
