Why We Love MMORPG Games

When it comes to games, there are none that are so addictive as MMORPG games. But why? Is it because the graphics are just to die for? No – I mean, have you seen some of the free MMO games out there – not graphically stimulating. Is it because the story line is something that we can truly get immersed in? Not really, I mean, most story lines in MMORPG’s are basically the same. No, there is actually a whole other reason that makes MMORPG gaming so addictive.

It’s because it allows you to be exactly who you want to be.

Think about it. You get to choose how you look down to your body type and hair, your name, what you are good at, how you act, and how brave you are. There are no set “clicks”, there are no “right or wrong” ways to look, and you work your way up – like everyone does. The game is truly what you make it.

This is where you escape your real life – no matter if it’s great or not. This is where you are who you want to be – not who you are right now. This is where your hard work pays off and you can show that off – not cheating your way through life or having it handed to you.

Take a second and think about how popular World of Warcraft is and how rich it’s made Blizzard. Why would millions of people all over the world be so addicted to a game that it crashes relationships, sucks people into a game world so far that they forget their cleaning at home, forget to take care of their kids, and stop going to work? Because it is a complete escape from reality. You are in your own world, where you control everything that matters. If you don’t want to do dailies, you don’t. If you want to surf the Auction House all day and blow your gold, you can. If you spend every bit of gold your toons have, you can go out and easily make some more – you aren’t waiting for your check to arrive next week. There are no bills, no relationship problems, no real jobs – and if you mess up and don’t like yourself in game – you simply delete it and create a whole new you.

This is why we love our MMORPG games. This is why they will always be popular. This is why the Blizzard’s of the world will always make money.

But, when the game makers start forgetting this, we will lose our love affair with MMORPG games. I see where some game makers are more trying to bank on ideas and areas that don’t matter to gamers. They try to control too much, which makes their games less popular and ends up crashing them completely. What do I mean? Well, let’s take a little look at an example.

Take a look at Star Wars. This story has a massive following all over the world that has lasted for decades. There are movies, books, toys, collectibles, games, and even cereal bowls that bare the Star Wars logo. So, when they announced that they were creating an MMO game around the story line – what true Star Wars fan wouldn’t be excited? Yet, they forgot the most important part of MMORPG gaming – that we gamers like to control just about everything. I mean, story line is important. But not so important that you completely immerse everything in the game around it. Gamers need a bit of freedom to control things and to be able to shape out their own character’s lives in game.

Now, this is not the only thing that is wrong with Star Wars, or the other MMORPG games out there – because believe me – there is. But, this is the main thing that developers and producers miss when they are creating an MMORPG game that will make it crash and burn faster than anything.

So, the next time that you are wondering why in the hell people are so in love with MMORPG gaming – take a second to think about what all in your life you would love to get away from. And that right there is why we will always love MMORPG gaming.
