How To Become A Game Designer

When it comes to being a video game tester, there are so many different jobs that go hand-in-hand that you can move over to when you are ready. Becoming a game designer is one of the many that not only pay well, but offer a great way to get your gaming ideas out there and into the hands of gamers all over the world. But, to become a game designer, it takes some work and dedication. Here are the steps that you need to take to become a video game designer:

Step 1: Take game design classes. With the gaming market booming right now, there are thousands of different schools (both online and off) that offer great game design classes that will teach you everything you need to know quickly, so that you can basically choose your own graduation date and start work asap. These classes take anywhere from 6 months to 3 years, depending on what type of degree or certification you are after or how deep into the game design you want to get. The further and more detailed you get into a game design class and degree you get, the better design position you will be able to get and the more money you will make. Just about every school out there offers financial aid for students, so take advantage of all of the help that they offer so you can get into all the classes as quickly as possible.

Step 2: Take computer language classes. Every game designer and programmer needs a good solid understanding of computer languages – from C++ to Java and everything in between and around them, you need to have a firm grasp on a couple of different computer languages out there so that you know how to use them. By being fluent in any of the major computer languages out there today, you will easily be able to jump into some of the game design classes easier and excel faster with your work and learn how the basics are done in creating great video games.

Step 3: Learn how to design your own mini games from your computer. There are millions of different sites on the web that will show you how to design and create you own mini games. While they will take a little bit to design and work the bugs out, after a little bit of practice, you will find that they get easier and easier to design and by creating them, you are working on your own game design experience. Also, by learning how to design and create your own mini games, you gain some valuable experience in trial and error when you are both working on the games and testing them out. This experience is priceless when it comes to applying for a job in the gaming industry, either as a game designer or as a video game tester. It also shows potential employers that you are motivated enough to put the time into creating games that you are not getting paid to make.

Step 4: Find as much information on creating video games as you possibly can. There are tons of great books that you can find on how to become a video game designer that will offer you other points of view beyond just the ones that you are learning about in class. You should not have to spend a ton of money on these books either, you should easily be able to find many of them at the library or through Amazon or other online book stores that will give you a great discount on them. The more that you know about game design, the better prepared you will be when you are to the point that you are creating them.

Step 5: Keep up with the latest in both game design and technology that relates to gaming. Subscribe to several of the online newsletters, RSS feeds, or other news items that deal with these things. By keeping yourself in tune with the latest information in both gaming and technology, you will find that it will be easier for you to understand and make adjustments in your own learning and game creation to fit what is hot in the market at the moment. Also, being on top of the latest news and information in the gaming market will help you stay in demand as a game designer.

Step 6: Once you have finished up classes and you have experience in creating and testing out your own games, you want to start applying for game designer positions with some of the gaming companies in your area. (Most of the schools that offer game design classes also offer a job placement for students who attend their classes, so take advantage of this if you can.) Make sure that you follow the steps in the guide on creating a winning resume and cover letter just like you would for a video game tester position. By creating these two winning pieces of work, gaming companies will make sure to see that you are fully trained in game design and that you will be an asset to them and their next game.

Basically, you want to make sure that you can get as much video game design training and experience as possible. From classes to creating your own games, soak in as much information as you can so that you are sure to be on top of your game.
