Hot Gamer Chick Avatars & Why We Love Them
Ok, when a friend of mine (thanks Jean) shared a site with me that I hadn’t, uh, discovered yet – it got me thinking about how women are portrayed in the MMO and general gaming industry. And, if you stop and think about it, you’ll know exactly what I’m saying here. So, let’s chat just a bit about this shall we? First off, there are two sides to this story – women’s and men’s. Let’s start with the men.
Gaming is either just a hobby or a serious addiction for men (same with women, so don’t get mad there guys). Yet, in a game, all of the women are the same: hot, well built, big hooters, tiny waists, long legs, huge guns, and they can kick some ass. Makes you think of just about every game you’ve ever played right guys? While there are some variations in this, all of the female in gaming are basically the same. (Ok, not the Tauren females in WoW – but that’s the only one I can really think of… they are just built like a cow and that’s all their is to it.) Even some of the ugliest chicks in games (i.e. Orcs) have huge hooters, small waists, and can seriously kick some butt. Why do you think this is? Because it’s damn sexy, that’s why. It makes guys buy video games because they love hot chicks with big guns.
So, naturally, game designers have stuck with this theory since it seems to be working for them. Guys love hot gamer chicks – either real or imagined… that’s all there is to it. (Uh, think Mia Rose and that infamous World of ___ that got her on Blizzard’s radar.) And, with the high popularity of gamer porn, I have to say that it’s a formula that will continue to work as long as there are games. Face it, sex sells – has for centuries and will for centuries…
Now, on to the women’s side. I’m sure that I’ll get tons of hate mail for this opinion, but I don’t really care, and here’s why: all women want to be seen as desirable. Don’t lie girls – you know that it’s true deep down. No matter if it’s “sex kitten” desirable or “girl next door” hot, no woman wants to be considered ugly. So, even though some people who are trying to be “politically correct” keep throwing fits about how women are portrayed in gaming, it will never change because A) men love it and B) women can be hot gaming girls no matter how they look in RL (real life for all you non-gamers).
Being considered desirable in a game these days is also a status symbol. You want to have a hot girl gamer avatar that kicks ass because, girls, let’s face it, boys love that. (Boys, you know you do.)/
So, the next time that you hear a woman, (or man trying to be “politically correct”), bitching about how women are portrayed in video games…. know that in some game, somewhere, she is playing a scantily-clad, ass-kicking, hot gamer chick too – and just doesn’t want to tell you.
