That’s not a woman, it’s a man, baby!

The waves lapped gently just at the edge of my hearing, a soothing and gentle caress against the sand at my feet as I watched the twilight sky darken. Brilliant reds slashed the bruised horizon of secretive purple and magical blue hues.

I didn’t see the fireball coming. It was my fault, really, for turning off the mod that let me see other characters casting. I was logged onto my priest in Timorous Deep, and I can tell you right away that my armor wasn’t going to withstand a second fireball.

The dark elf at my side knelt before me in humility and reverence, before standing to face down my foe.

“Why should you protect a human?” the evil wizard hissed from the shadows. Luckily for me, I had learned the dark language years ago, and I understood every insidious word.

“She is my wife,” my protector answered back.

“No she isn’t,” my skulking adversary proclaimed from the shadows. “That’s a man. Everyone knows women don’t play video games.”

I wanted to stand then, to say that I was insulted by the fact that he called me a man, but then I realized…Nothing I could say would ever convince someone like him.

“Nothing you say will convince me she is a girl,” he stated coldly.

Never let it be said that I wasn’t right…

I realized at that time that female gamers were a rather rare breed. I met two others, I think, during my Everquest stint. And a few more as the years passed.

Now, as I rest easy on my laurels in World of Warcraft, I can say I know quite a few gamers that really are women. And I can tell you one sure way to spot them. They’ll never tell you until they get to know and trust you.

After all, how many of you really knew about me?
